Do I need to replace both sides of the toms, snare, and bass or just the top?
Answer: The 'top' head or batter head is the head you strike with the sticks, so it should be replaced when it starts sounding dead or if it has small indentations. While the 'bottom' or resonant head is never actually struck, it does expand and retract and vibrate when the batter head is struck causing some minor wear and tear. It can be replaced every 4th or 5th time you replace a batter head. On a snare drum, keep in mind that the snares actually touch the snare side head, causing it to possibly wear out a little sooner. It really comes down to how the drum sounds to you, how often you play, whether you are recording or just jamming with friends, and your budget.
