iBasso Over-Ear Headphones SR1 Editorial Review
The iBasso Audio SR1 is a limited edition headphone, which is an ode to the 1920s scifi movie Metropolis. It is a semi-ported design that features 50mm drivers and has a unique appearance due to its elaborate baffle system. The headband is premium leather, and the padding is thick memory foam that is comfortable even for the most sensitive ears. The sound signature is unique and precise, with exceptional clarity and detail, and a wide soundstage that separates vocals and instruments distinctly. The headphones have decent build quality, but the paint seems easily scratched. The comfort level is acceptable, and the sound quality is dynamic and engaging, with mildly U-shaped sound that is fun and kicking. However, the treble could have a little bit more air and extension. Perforated earpads could improve it. The bass could sound slightly stiff at times, but it is overall well separated. One of the problems that some customers encountered was the imaging, which sounded weird due to the pads used. The placement of instruments was not coherent and logical, which could be a deal-breaker for classical and jazz music listeners. The headphones are easy to drive, but you need to be careful about the power you put into them as they can be easily overdriven. The SR1s are sensitive to recording quality, and bad recordings will expose every flaw. The headphones provide exceptional value for money and perform well for their price range compared to other premium headphones costing $1000 or more. The best thing about them is their unique appearance and design. If you can find a pair, buy them.
